PS3 - How to Boot into Recovery Mode

This is a guide on how to boot up your PlayStation 3 into Recovery Mode or PS3 Safe Mode, as it is called by Sony, was introduced on PS3 with the Firmware 2.50 or newer. The Recovery menu gives access to the factory setup options which can help you fix many common PS3 system errors such as corrupted firmware data, corrupted system files or even force your PS3 to restore to a PS3 custom firmware.

PS3 Recovery Mode Menu
The menu has the following options: 1.Restart System, 2.Restore Default Settings, 3.Restore File System, 4.Rebuild Database, 5.Restore PS3 System and 6.System Update. Here is what you need to do in order to boot your PS3 into Recovery Mode...

Step 1: Turn off your Playstation 3.

Step 2: Hold the Power button down. The system will turn on and turn off once again.

Step 3: Once the system has been shutdown, Re-press and hold you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps.

Step 4: When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then press the PS button. The Recovery Menu will pop up.

Restart System.

  1. My PS3 CECH-2101A will not boot into Recovery Mode. I have followed your instructions on how to get into Recovery Menu several times to no avail. When I press the power button start's to boot up with a green light for 5 seconds then light turns to a flashing red light then beeps three times then shut down. What could possibly be the problem and how I correct it without having to send it in for repairs. My PS3 was booting up fine but had a problem with not being able to read discs. So I took it apart "which I have done many time before" to clean the laser in the blue ray drive. Once I put it back together I get this problem. Please let me know what I can do......Thanks

  2. Recovery Mode is useful to fix the system error on ps3, such as corrupted firmware.. Not a hardware problem..

It seems the Hardware problems indicated by flashing red lights. Beep 3 times indicating bd-rom not found and/or the mechanical system does not work normally..

    1. Try to dismantle the mechanical system back .. in this case, the position of the lid top and drawer units are not in proper position.

Suppose disassembled mechanical in the position with disc inserted ... and reassembled with no disc inserted..

in this case the sensor system becomes chaotic ..

    2. Clean the ribbon cable with a contact cleaner.. and check the cables are not torn or scratched... make sure the power cable is also attached.

    Hopefully this help.. :)

  3. Make sure you unplug everything from the USB ports. It won't work otherwise.

  4. This is semi related to what you've touched on, but I just bought a new PS3 to replace my YLOD-ed PS3 and I wanted to stick my PS3 40GB drive into my PS3 Slim. I was told the firmware needed to be 3.66 or newer. I was not aware of the Recovery menu that you've outlined.

So I'm wondering if I stick the 40Gb drive in the slim and have the newest firmware on a USB stick will Recovery menu allow me to update the hardware on the drive? (After that I would simply run a backup and restore to the 320Gb HDD that came with the system.) Or am I forced to boot up the 40Gb on a "fat" PS3 in order to get the firmware updated? Any other ways to solve the issue would be appreciated as I don't feel like doing the temporary YLOD fix again.

    Thank you for any help.

  5. @Erik Berkowicz: sorry i did not catch your point really.. YLOD is a hardware problem, not the firmware.

If you put your 40gb hdd in your ps3 slim, your slim will format 40gb and install a part of firmware on the version of ps3 or newer. And when you return it to the ps3 fat, the system firmware will become mismatch.. or semibrick.!

If you only want to backup e.g. SaveData from 40gb, you must backup its from your fat ps3.

    Hopefully this help.. :-)

  6. @Purnomo: I intended to take the PS3 fat HDD that has all my old stuff on it and stick it into the slim to run a system backup onto another drive. Then replace the 320GB that came with the slim and restore my data from my original fat PS3 onto the new slim (and go on with my life).

My slim did not format the 40gb HDD when I put it into the slim, but neither was it able to boot the system as I was told it requires Firmware 3.66.

I'm looking for a way to backup the 40gb HDD from my old fat so that I can restore that data on my 320gb slim HDD without having to temporarily repair YLOD just for the sake of the system backup.

I was hoping the recovery menu would allow a firmware update of my 40gb HDD inserted into the slim and using a memory stick with the latest firmware. Once the firmware was newer than 3.66 I was hoping the 40gb drive would be able to boot up my old data on the slim in order for me to run a system backup.

Are there any other ways around this? Would it work if I borrowed a working PS3 fat and just swapped the HDD for the duration of a backup and then swapped back (some of my friends have PS3 "fats").

    Thanks

  7. @Erik Berkowicz: Unfortunately PS3 HDD can not be swapped, even between on the same system..
"My slim did not format the 40gb HDD when I put it into the slim, but neither was it able to boot the system as I was told it requires Firmware 3.66."
This does not notify the format information, but is executed in the process.. when you plug the usb stick with 3.66 firmware or newer. a part of 3.66 FW (Your slim FW version), is needed to be installed on 40gb and the old system will be removed.

The only way to do it is to get your YLOD powered on long enough to complete a Backup or a Data Transfer. unfortunately there is no way to extract your data..

  9. And this is why companies should stop treating their customers like criminals. There is no reason why Erik should not be able to plug his hd into any working ps3 or hell, a pc and back up that data to be reloaded on a new pc. Only reason you can't is cause they care more about stopping pirates than taking care of their customers.

  10. hi i am ahving sony 60 gb console with firmware version 2.20 installed on it. from last few weeks i am unable to get to my xmb display. ps3 turns on fine but is not showing on my tv. i used both a/v and HD cord but no progress. i am unable to get it to safe mode as when i try to put my finger on it, it just beeps once and then turn of ( may be due to lower firmware). help me what to do?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Recovery menu is available on fw 2.50 or newer.. try some of these things for analysis:

Use A/V cable in this case, and unplug all the equipment is not required, HDMI, MS, USB, etc..

    A. Do System Restore on step 2 and 3.. When you hear the second beeps (not 2 consecutive beeps.) take finger off power button. see ps3 could boot to XMB? you should try it a few times...

    B. Remove your HDD, and repeat step A...

    C. You need a Jailbreak Downgrader to try boot your ps3 into Factory Mode..

    Hopefully this help.. :-)

  14. 1. No, firmware is stored not on the hdd only, to downgrade you can use e.g. E3 Flasher.. but, there are some console that can not be downgraded.. You need to learn more..

    2. Yes, this is not easy.. and, is beyond my knowledge..

    3. Currently does not exist.. there is one developed by kakaroto, but it seems to require more time to reach the final release. we can only wait...

  17. can i downgrade my oFW 3.60 to oFW 3.55 so i can install cFW 3.55.Just want to try and hack my old 80 gb ps3.Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes, if you have E3 Flasher. This can downgrade your ps3 firmware, but this is not worth again since CFW3.55 can not play games 3.60+ without need any other dongle..

  21. Can you boot your ps3 into xmb? fails on the ps3 system updates can also be caused by the hdd.. eg data corrupt or fragment on hdd.. If you can still boot to XMB, you can try to format the hdd before updating, and make sure the updater file is not corrupted. Otherwise you need no. 4/5.

    2. What is your ps3 fw? have you try to reformat the hdd? if not, unplug your hdd, and use the pc to format hdd to fat32... then plugin back hdd to your ps3, turn it on.. If you not sure, you can use another hdd compatible to fix and save your save-data...

You will be asked for FW update of same version or higher.. Sometimes you need a higher version, if the same version does not work.. :-)

    3. how do i do all that though??? and i dont know if it makes a difference but i got the 320 gig ps3

    4. The update failed (8002f313) usually if there is a regkey file system was corruptted or if hdd itself has been damaged... the ps3 system itself provide a feature HDD format and Backup/Restore systems, as you see above.

However, when you use the above features, ps3 will use/restore the system stored in dev_flash. (old system installed that may have been corrupt as well.) in this case, it might can not fix the problem.

By formatting the hdd on the PC, it will remove all the PS3 systems on your hdd,.. and your console can not recognize the ps3 firmware on it hdd, so it will create a new system on the hdd by extracting from FW updater. You will be asked for FW update of same version or higher...

It will makes a difference, If you not experienced with this, you may consider to send it for repairing..

Its only a bit of explanation.. and hopefully this help.. :-)

    6. FW=firmware and read your manual book on how to unplug your HDD.. but, If you not experienced with this, you may consider to send it for repairing.. and try its at your own risks!

    7. ok wil the manual also tell me how to reformat it?? and can i reformat it on another ps3 or does it have to be done on a pc

    8. I think not, and yes, you can format it on another ps3... but recommended for the best is use the pc.
